Aww Shift

Sep 24, 2021

In today’s episode, our guest is Brian Johnson, author and an Emmy Award-winning producer in Los Angeles who works with the biggest names like James Corden’s carpool karaoke, Tavis Smiley, Arsenio Hall, Bill Nye the Science Guy. He’s with the industry for a long time as a producer and author of Live Your Dreams Out Loud. Today, he is going to share how he wants to help out other people reach their dreams.

[8:45] Why should we listen to you?

There's something energetically about who I am. If you're sitting down next to me and want to talk to me, you're going to get a true assessment of life and value. I want to help anyone by extending my efforts as much as I can.

[10:50] How did you get to the point where you want to help other people blossom?

It was during my childhood when my grandparents are always helping the community even though we didn’t have a lot financially. As a young little kid growing up in Skipper Ville Alabama, that just really grew on me. It became natural for me to help other people just like my grandparents did.

[12:13] Core Values

My success came when I made the decision to sacrifice. So now people see all of the accolades and the things that I do, but it was in the sacrifice that really got me to this point. It took me a long time to accomplish where I am now.

[13:26] Accomplishments

It’s when I moved to Los Angeles where I was mentored by someone who was already doing what I wanted to do. And from there, began my journey. I've been part of some great franchises and got a chance to produce television shows and work with some of the world's biggest name in the industry

[15:07] What's that whole experience like?

I think it's because my genuine intent is to just add value. As long as I'm genuine and pure, the way that I operate, I can't control the outcome. I seek out counsel and just learning behind the scenes from so many different people. I have trouble getting started because I don’t have these millions of dollars budget and I have to start from where I am right now. I'm just focused on myself and I'm not in competition with anybody.

[16:38] How did you find your way of helping people? Is there a process to it?

I learned a long time ago that I was able to turn my mess into my message. If you're trying to help people, start with your story. We've all grown through things in life. I wrote a book where there’s everything that I've done and how I was able to overcome that. I just doubled down on finding and helping people who have been in very similar situations now and evolved from that. I intentionally open a coaching business with nothing to show people that you don't have to have everything together to help people to do what you need to do to get started.

[19:01] Is there some kind of carryover congruence to your ability to help because of sports?

Sports is the foundational makeup of who I am as a person. The experiences that have shaped me that I can't even write down. There's something about athletics that teaches you discipline, the importance of hard work, the importance of teamwork and chemistry and just going above and beyond.

[21:54] How do you do speeches as a coach? Where do you link that hooper instinct in what you do?

The art of conversation and being able to communicate with somebody. I think there's just a certain skill that I feel that I can coach people better and coach myself. But I can sit down with anybody and just have a great conversation and take you from blank page to finish product or something, just that process in between. Establishing those boundaries as a coach and ensuring that you're not getting too involved from a personal standpoint, and strategizing and helping people out, and allowing them to reach their goal.

[24:23] What's the best flow for you?

Hiring a team to help systematize and be more organized is one of the best decisions that I've had to do. I think sometimes as entrepreneurs depending on where you are in the process, just the mindset shift. It's about leveling up and invested in yourself.

[25:42] What's the coaching program about? Who's the perfect client for it?

I created the 90-day bestseller accelerator program with a one-on-one session. It’s about teaching people not only how to write a book, but how to truly build a business from that. And how you leverage that and make money and leverage the publicity in the world that I've been a part of.
